4. Mattress
5. Don’t Forget
Atmosphere are back with a small taster to their up and coming 6th studio album When Life Gives You Lemons. The release kicks off with Sunshine which over a flip floppy beat and a soft piano sample Slug delivers his ramblings on being hungover and the regret that comes with such a soirĂ©e. The aptly titled The Number One comes after this track which is the atypical Atmosphere track. The beat comprises of a plucky subtle bass and with vocal samples to the tune of “ooh yeah” and “yeah” building the base of the verse with the hook samples “you’re number one yea”.
Rftc is the third track which delivers a second person view on hitting up trains graffiti style, with the nerves that go with. Despite the fact that our graf artists gets caught there is a happy ending as the cops lets him go!
And that’s when the universe stopped for you / now you looking straight at a uniformed officer / What you think should you run run / and take a chance with his stun gun
The gem of the record for me appears next with the name Mattress, with a faster beat and semi- disco sound accompanied by speedy strumming guitars and a piano fill. This track really has a summer flavour and Slug here talks about the stains on the mattress which, honestly, aren’t as bad as it sounds.
The release is closed by the heavy piano and slappy beat not too far from the opening to a Bens Folds Five.
The hook reads The soundtrack still runs through my head / I gotta keep every single step / As old as we get we don’t forget / We won’t forget and the tracks carries Slug’s self-reflection on his journey to his current place, occupation and music.
A solid release all round and it really goes lengths to build anticipation for the release of the new album early next year. It’s no Lucy Ford but the new LP may still surprise me.
